The Apostle

There's much that I enjoyed about this movie (growing up as the son of a preacher man and winning preaching contests throughout my adolescence) there was much of the psyche of this character that resonated with me: the Apostle E.H. is clearly an iteration of the religious culture that he grew up in. The film's most remarkable coup is that the patient viewer cannot help but be a little won over to the old-timey religion that both accomodates the excesses of abusive preachers and heals and forgives them along with all the other lonely sinners of the world.
